As a Kansas City family photographer, I specialize in capturing the intimate bond between mothers and their children. While my journey started with photographing couples, I quickly realized that my true passion lies in motherhood photography—preserving the love and connection between moms and their little ones.
In Fall 2024, I attended a wedding photography workshop at Longview Mansion in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, led by the talented Mariam Saifan. While the workshop focused on wedding photography, it unexpectedly confirmed that family photography—especially motherhood sessions—is where my heart truly belongs. I’m excited to share what I learned and how this experience shaped my approach to capturing timeless family portraits in Kansas City.
One of the most valuable aspects of the workshop was Mariam herself. Her warm, welcoming approach created an environment where everyone felt comfortable asking questions. With photographers at various stages of their business journeys, she took the time to offer tailored guidance. She shared business strategies that apply across photography specialties, including how to establish yourself as a professional and build a sustainable business.
What resonated most with me was her emphasis on staying true to what you love most about photography. For a long time, I knew I thrived when photographing small, intimate connections—initially leading me toward couples photography. But when I tried to define my “why” for wedding photography, nothing felt quite right.
Mariam talked about making your business truly yours by filtering in more of what you love and less of what you don’t. That’s when it clicked—she helped me confirm my decision to focus exclusively on family photography, specializing in motherhood sessions like Mommy & Me portraits. Capturing that intimate mother-child bond? Yes, please! The moment I started thinking about motherhood photography, everything fell into place. I knew, without a doubt, that this was my place, my passion, and my purpose.
One workshop highlight was crafting my own flatlay background in soft shades of pink, purple, and white. While originally designed for wedding detail shots, I immediately saw its potential for family photography—perfect for capturing family heirlooms, newborn accessories, or special keepsakes during motherhood sessions. This customizable technique allows me to create more meaningful, personalized setups that beautifully complement each family’s unique story.
I’ve always loved natural light and outdoor sessions, but the weather had other plans! Strong wind bursts knocked over the decorative cake, forcing us to move indoors. And honestly? Those indoor photos became my favorites! The abundant natural light streaming through Longview Mansion’s windows created the dreamiest conditions—soft, airy, and timeless.
I fell in love with the bright white backdrop, the charming window panes, and the cozy atmosphere. This experience inspired me to offer more indoor motherhood photography options in Kansas City, creating a space where moms and their little ones can feel relaxed and natural.

During the workshop, each photographer received a personal branding session at The Studio Reverie. Having professional images that reflect my identity as a Kansas City family and motherhood photographer is invaluable for connecting with potential clients. These photos help communicate my style and approach, building trust before families even book a session with me.
While I enjoyed learning wedding photography techniques, this workshop reaffirmed that my true passion lies in family photography—particularly motherhood sessions. I love creating a relaxed environment where mothers and their children can be themselves, capturing the small, fleeting moments of connection that might otherwise slip by unnoticed.
Rather than documenting a single day, I find fulfillment in building ongoing relationships with families and watching their children grow through my lens. One of my favorite things? I have a dear friend who has been booking family sessions with me since I first started. Every year, she adds another professional portrait to her wall, showcasing how much her kids have grown. It’s incredible to see both their transformation and my own growth as a family photographer in Kansas City.
Mariam’s photography workshop provided invaluable insights that extended beyond the wedding industry. I’m excited to incorporate these new skills and business strategies into my family and motherhood photography practice, creating even more meaningful experiences for the families I work with.
