Welcome to the blog, where I share tips, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and beautiful stories from working with families to create lasting heirlooms.

If you’re looking for a Kansas City lifestyle newborn photographer who captures the natural, everyday beauty of your baby, no matter their age, this session with James is the perfect example. His session took place after that “ideal” two-week mark, and it turned out to be everything we hoped for: calm, cozy, and full of real moments.

Collage of two in-home newborn photos: first, a close-up of a newborn being held outward by his mother; second, the mother standing in front of a window, gently holding her newborn in her arms, with their hands touching as they look at each other.

Some babies bring a quiet calm with them, and James was one of those little souls.

Zoe reached out about doing a newborn session when James was already a few weeks old. As a Kansas City newborn photographer, I often get asked what to do when baby has already passed that two-week window. The truth is, once babies are a little older, those posed, sleepy images become a bit harder to achieve, as they’re more awake, more curious, and much more wiggly!

But that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. It just means it’s the perfect opportunity for a lifestyle newborn session.

Why Lifestyle Newborn Sessions Are Perfect for Older Babies

We planned to photograph James with his mama, capture his newborn features like tiny ears, lips, and toes, and include special items like his pacifier and favorite blankets. These images tell a story that’s both personal and timeless.

Collage of newborn announcement photos: first, the baby in a tan-and-white striped sleeper lying beside a “Hello World” sign and his name spelled out behind him; second, a close-up of the same baby sleeping with a brown and tan pacifier.
Collage of newborn detail photos: first, the baby’s tiny foot peeking out of a tan-and-white striped sleeper; second, a close-up of the baby's hand resting near his temple, fingers extended with the pinkie finger curled down.

A Gentle, Heart-Led Session at Home

James was calm and content throughout the session, occasionally letting out the softest little whimper whenever he wanted some snuggles from his mama. So we followed his lead.

Zoe held him up against her chest near the window light, and the moment that unfolded was quiet and beautiful. She gently held his hand, and the two of them just breathed each other in. These are the moments lifestyle sessions are made for.. honest and unscripted.

Collage of two tender newborn moments: first, a close-up of mother and baby holding hands while the baby rests on her chest; second, a black and white photo of the mother looking down lovingly at her newborn in a quiet, intimate moment.

We snuggled James into his little sleep pouch, and as he started to relax, we placed him into his cot where we had arranged a cozy blanket and the letters of his name. Everything felt so peaceful, just how these early days often don’t, which made it all the more special to document.

The Best of Both Worlds: Simple Posed + Lifestyle Images

Even though posed photos can be tricky with older babies, James surprised us! Gabe helped swaddle him into a soft green wrap, and with his pacifier in, he slowly drifted off to sleep.

Collage of newborn swaddle details: first, baby sleeping with one arm out of the swaddle, gently holding a pacifier; second, a close-up of the pacifier slowly falling from the baby’s mouth while his hand supports it.

We ended up getting a few simple, beautiful posed shots of him sleeping peacefully, just wrapped and relaxed. No fancy setups, just James in his natural calm, and it was perfect.

That’s the magic of lifestyle sessions: they leave space for the real moments while still allowing room for those classic newborn portraits if baby is up for it.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Your Newborn Session (Even If Baby Isn’t Brand New)

If your baby is already a few weeks old and you’re worried you’ve missed the “ideal” photo window, please don’t. You haven’t missed anything. You’re living it, right now.

Lifestyle newborn photography is about documenting your baby as they are, in the home you’ve made for them, in the arms of the people who love them most. Whether your newborn is five days or five weeks old, your story is still unfolding, and it deserves to be remembered.

The beginning of your life together may not go exactly as planned, but it’s still worth documenting.
