There is something incredibly special about photographing a newborn in the place where their life is just beginning. In-home newborn photos in Emporia, Kansas allow families to slow down and remember not only how small their baby was, but what those first days at home actually felt like.

When I arrived to photograph baby Wallace, their home was filled with the anticipation that comes with welcoming a new little life. Every room reflected the months of excitement leading up to his arrival. The nursery his parents prepared, the little details they carefully chose, and the moments of them learning life as a family of three all became part of these first memories together.

Simple and Natural Beginnings

We started in the master bedroom with simple off-white bedding. No elaborate setup or complicated posing – just little Wally!

It’s the perfect place to slow down and notice the little things that change so quickly: his tiny fingers curling around yours, his soft skin, and the little stretches of a baby getting comfortable in a brand-new world.

These simple moments are some of my favorites because they don’t need anything extra. Just a baby, their parents, and the beginning of a new chapter.

A Nursery Full of Meaning

Wallace’s parents filled his nursery with little touches inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia, including the swaddle his aunt gifted him at his baby shower – a sweet detail that felt perfectly at home in his nursery.

As his mom gently undressed him, Wallace quickly reminded us that newborns have their own plans. When the cool air reached his chest, he let us know he wasn’t quite ready for that. We quickly wrapped him back up while the heater caught up, but Wallace had another idea – escaping his swaddle not once, but twice before finally settling into the cozy little bundle he had been determined to leave.

These are the moments that make lifestyle newborn photography so meaningful. They aren’t perfectly planned or posed. They’re little glimpses of who your baby was in those first days.

The Space They’ll Always Remember

We then moved into the nursery, photographing Wallace in the little space his parents dreamed about, prepared, and filled with love before he ever came home.

The textures, the afternoon light, the tiny details chosen before he arrived, those are often the first things to fade from memory.

Including these pieces allows families to remember more than just what their baby looked like. They remember the home they brought their baby into, the room where they rocked him to sleep, and the quiet beginning of learning who he was.

A Mother and Father’s Love

At the beginning of the session, Kristen was a little unsure. She wondered what posing with a newborn would look like and whether she would know what to do.

I reminded her that her only job was to simply be present with her baby.

And that’s when everything changed.

She relaxed. She leaned in. She started gently poking his cheeks, smiling, and making those little “ahoo” sounds that only a mom seems to know how to make. It wasn’t something she had to think about, it was simply her being his mom.

You don’t have to do anything perfectly.

You just have to be there with your baby.

Watching Kristen and Caleb together was one of my favorite parts of the session. There was an ease between them as they cared for Wallace, each stepping in naturally and working together as they settled into this new season of parenthood.

In the nursery, we placed Wally on his dad’s chest. You could see the pride in the way Caleb held him—steady, protective, and completely present. When Kristen leaned in beside them, the moment became even sweeter. The way she wrapped herself around both of them felt like a glimpse into the love that will continue to fill their home.

The Beauty of In-Home Newborn Photography

In-home newborn photography isn’t about having a perfect home or creating a picture-perfect moment.

It’s about presence.

It’s about remembering the way your baby fit into your arms, the rooms where you cared for them, and the ordinary moments that felt so big because everything was new.
